Breadfruit Tree

It is an abundant tree in the tropics and in the Caribbean. It grows easily in a wide range of ecological conditions and requires minimal care. Under favorable conditions, it begins to bear fruit in 2-3 years, producing in abundance for many decades. A single tree can produce up to 200 or more fruits per season. The tree has been shown to be resistant to tropical storms.

Reforestation Benefits

Breadfruit is an ideal tree for reforestation. It grows quickly and the forest’s ground cover can grow with diversity under its canopy. The timber is a sturdy, dense, water resistant softwood. Breadfruit is relatively disease and pest-free with most problems occurring regionally. The most common widespread problems include white fly, scale, mealy bugs, Cercospora leaf spot, and fruit rots caused by Phytophthora, Colletotrichum (anthracnose), and Rhizopus.
